Physical Education

Our Vision for PE

Physical Education is a foundation subject within the National Curriculum in which children are taught to develop their skills to give them the opportunity to succeed and excel in related activities.

At St Wilfrid’s Primary School, we aim to provide arrange of activities, both within and outside lesson time that are fun, engaging and will inspire all pupils to lead physically active lives.

We strive to realise the potential of every child’s, enabling pupils them to know more about physical activity and how it is a key component of a healthy lifestyle.

We aim to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness, whilst boosting self-confidence, self-esteem and supporting the development of social skills; encouraging all children to become successful, lifelong learners.

Research demonstrates a direct link between children’s physical and mental health and therefore we aim to provide experiences that will inspire pupils to not only develop physically but ensure mental wellbeing and a desire to succeed.

As the children move through the school, knowledge and skills are built upon and learning takes place sequentially. Our curriculum is designed in a way that enables the teachers to have the flexibility to ensure that the children develop knowledge and skills through the use of a wide range of sports.

Our curriculum links clearly to key drivers developed across all curriculum areas. Teachers and pupils make connections in their learning, for example by linking previously taught knowledge and skills to current activities. We strive to develop appropriate links with the local and wider community, that will enhance our provision in this area, and encourage pupils to apply their understanding of a number of Christian values to help them succeed.

Intent

Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of the St Wilfrid’s curriculum. We aim to engage all pupils in a supportive yet challenging programme of study. We aim to ensure our pupils acquire, develop and refine their practical skills and techniques in a range of subjects, to develop their knowledge and understanding of concepts and principles and develop their overall competence, to enjoy, and excel in, a broad range of sports and physical activities.

We do this through the provision of high-quality teaching and learning opportunities which enable all children to succeed. We aim that all children enjoy their learning, are supported to be resilient and consistently strive to give their best efforts at all times and achieve their potential and personal best, regardless of their ability.

Children participate in a range of competitive sports through which we teach children how to cooperate and collaborate effectively as part of a team and compete appropriately against others, adhering to the principles of fairness, sportsmanship and respect, values we hope to embed for future life.

We understand the importance PE, School Sport and Physical Activity has on children’s general health, fitness and mental wellbeing. We provide opportunities for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and we teach children the importance of leading healthy, active lives and making informed and appropriate lifestyle choices.

Swimming is an important life skill and we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres.
