In maths, we will begin the term by looking at column multiplication and short division, multiplying fractions and finding fractions of an amount/ quantity. Towards the second half of the term, we will be working with decimals and percentages, linking the two together. We will also be doing some work on perimeter and area and statistics in which we will focus on line graphs, interpreting tables and timetables. You may find the following videos helpful when continuing learning at home.
Welcome to Year 5
Science
In Spring 1, we will be looking at space. An in depth study of all the planets is not part of this unit but rather a real focus on the Earth, sun and moon, how they move and how this movement causes day/night and seasons..
In spring 2, we are focusing in on changes and reproduction through the unit ‘Animals including humans’. We will cover the stages of growth and development, naming each stage such as embryo/ foetus, new born, toddler, childhood, adolescent, adulthood and old age. Our learning will take us to how pregnancy happens and look at how long pregnancy lasts in humans and compare to other mammals. The children will consider the changes that occur in boys and girls as they go through puberty and how the body changes during adulthood and old age.

RE
Our first overarching question in RE is ‘How are religious and spiritual thoughts and beliefs expressed in arts and architecture and in charity and generosity? We will then explore the question ‘What kind of King is Jesus?’ As part of this work we will be looking at the connections between biblical texts and the concept of the kingdom of God. Children will have the opportunity to explore issues and problems in the world today and think about how the world could learn from Christian ideas and beliefs.
Geography
In Geography this half term we are focussing on modern day Greece. The children will be learning about the physical and human features of the country including populations, settlements, economic activity and trade, The children will develop atlas skills and learn how to use grid references to locate mountains, rivers, seas and cities.
We will be looking at tourism in Greece and learning some of the names of the popular Greek Islands.
History
In history, we are going to be exploring what life was like during the Tudor times and a specific look at Henry VIII. We will focus in of the difference between the classes and what sort of monarch King Henry was: Was he a tyrant or a fair king? As part of this component of learning, the children will be exposed to lots of different sources of historical evidence such as paintings, diaries and census records.
Art
Year 5 will explore the process of making monotypes through the work of artist Kevork Mourad who uses monotypes to build sculptures and installations. They will be focussing upon a project which gives them the opportunity to use the monotype process (combined with painting and collage) to make a “zine”, inspired by a piece of poetry.
D&T
The class will be following on from their science last half term and bringing their understanding of mechanisms in to their D&T. They will be using CAMS to create moving parts to space themed toys.
PE
There is lots going on in PE this term!
Mr Devivo will be teaching both PE sessions in spring 1. He will be covering basket ball skills (outdoor where possible) and circuits. In spring 2, year 5 will be doing some gymnastics based on balance and Mr Devivo will be working on their tennis skills.
