Welcome to Year 4

Spring Term

English

In spring 1 children will learn how to write a diary recount using the book Roman Diary to help them, as well as creating and understanding vocabulary through drama. They will then review the myth of Romulus and Remus, which is the story of the formation of Rome and children will be tasked with creating their own supernatural character to include in a 'legendary' story.

In sprint 2, children will be writing a dilemma narrative, which is based around the book 'Escape from Pompeii'. Children will be working on creating powerful verbs to describe the eruption as well as creating dialogue between the main characters. Children will then be creating an instruction text on 'How to Survive an Earthquake', using the book 'Flood' as a stimulus.

In guided reading, we will be reading Daring Deeds

which  is a series of short stories and poems

Maths

In Maths, children began the term learning perimeter, multiplication and division. In spring 2 they will focus on understanding fractions through decimals and improper fractions ready to support them in the next unit on decimals.

Science

In spring 1 children will be using a variety of experiments and practical work children to discuss their understanding of 'states of matter'. Using the water cycle as a stimulus, they will understand how water can change between gas, liquid and solid. In Spring 2, the children’s topic is 'Animals including Humans', where children will be getting to grips with the digestive system and the importance of teeth and a functions of organs in this essential process.

Geography

In spring 2, children will be answering our enquiry question 'Can the Earth Shake, Rattle and Roll? Through investigating volcanoes and earthquakes around the world, the children will understand what happens during an earthquake, where they are more common and the impact earthquakes can have on people.

History

In spring 1, children will learn all about the Romans and their legacy that they have left behind in Britain They will learn about why they were able to win battles and what life would have been like for people living in this period of time. This will be explored further with a visit to Southwell Minster which is the site of a 2000 year old Roman Villa!

PE

Working with Mr. Gibbons, the children will be getting to grips with circuit training and creating some circuits of their own. In Spring 2, they will be going swimming and Mr. Devivo will be teaching the children basketball and other team sports.

RE

In Spring 1, the children will discuss the journey of life and death through researching important life events that are celebrated with rituals in a variety of religions, as well as understanding humanism. In Spring 2 children will revise the Easter story of Holy Week through a variety of activities, as well as helping to create the Easter garden for St Wilfrid’s Church in the village.

Computing

This terms topic is 'Further Coding with Scratch', where children will revise and develop their understanding of the programme Scratch.

D&T & Art

Following on with the theme of the Romans, children will be creating Roman Coin Purses, using a variety of stitches. In art, the topic for this term is 'Exploring Still Life', which will focus on the artist Paul Cezanne, using collage to create their own still life pieces.

PSHE & Relationships

In Spring 1, children will follow the Anti- Racism programme where they will learn about racism and how to be anti-racist, creating posters to showcase everything they have learnt.

In Spring 2, they will be learning about rights and responsibilities, understanding the role they can play in their community in order to help make it a safe place.
