Geography

Intent

Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. At St Wilfrid’s it is our intent to allow children to become familiar with their locality and explore the wider world. We aim to equip our pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deepening understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. The Geography curriculum enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferrable to other curriculum areas. At St Wilfrid’s, children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it.

Implementation

The teaching of Geography at St Wilfrid’s is in blocks throughout the year. Each year group having three blocks in total being taught within each term, alternating with History. Key knowledge and skills have been identified for each topic and these along with prior knowledge are displayed on the front cover for each topic in the children’s books. Knowledge organisers have been developed, which provide staff and children key vocabulary and information to be referred to during lessons, and support independent work. These are also made available to parents for support in further learning at home.
